Work on the Three Gorges Dam was just getting underway in 1996 when Dallas-based photographer Ka Yeung rode up the Yangtze River. Since then, massive water diversion projects, relocation of entire towns and an intricate series of locks and lifts have given the valley a facelift that rivals Kenny Rogers' in scale, and has turned Yeung's photographs into dramatic historical records of scenery that's underwater today. In massive black and white prints, including four photos printed across traditional Chinese scrolls, Yeung's show China Impermanent Beauty, Photography 1996-'97 highlights the scale of the forces behind the dam project. By mixing landscapes and city scenes of construction and decay, Yeung's photographs show how pervasive change has been in China--a country that has transformed more than any other in the last 15 years. Yeung is the first of three artists who will be showcased in the Crow Collection of Asian Art's new LinkAsia gallery space. His work hangs there through May 16.
