Nothing takes me back to one-fourth of my roots like a little accordion-driven, Czech-inspired polka music. Mutter the word kolache, and I'm there. The 3rd Annual Czech Music Festival is a newbie compared to other cultural festivals in the metroplex (the North Texas Irish Fest, Addison's Oktoberfest, etc.), but doesn't skimp on the good times--or the beer, which will be available for purchase on site. The festival will afford us all a chance to pay homage to the culture that brought us contact lenses, sugar cubes and Sigmund Freud. Hey, Czech Republic, thanks for saving me from that nasty pair of coke-bottle glasses in third grade! (With a last name like Knickerbocker, I was fighting other battles.) The Sokol Czech Museum and Library will be open from 2 to 7 p.m; St. John's Czech Choir will perform; and raffles for unidentified, probably Czech-inspired gifts will take place during the evening. Traditional Czech bands including Jak Se Do, The Czech Harvesters and The Jodie Mikula Orchestra are scheduled to serenade patrons until 11 p.m. So don your best kroj and think lederhosen-gone-Czech Saturday at the Sokol Activity Center, 2622 E. Highway 34 in Ennis. Admission is $5 per adult; children younger than 14 get in free. Call 972-878-4748.
Sat., Feb. 7, 2-11:30 p.m., 2009
