Long before there were Auto-Tune and GarageBand, music was recorded without all the bells and whistles straight to tape in these things called recording studios. One of the most respected (and beloved) studios of the last four decades was Los Angeles Sound City, where the likes of Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails and Johnny Cash made some of the greatest rock albums of all time. Sadly, the studio has gone the way of all things analog, but Dave Grohl is making sure that the studio’s story lives on with his directorial debut, Sound City. A huge hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, Sound City is a must-see for any rock and roll purist. Before it hits big (and small) screens everywhere, get a sneak peek at the film at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Magnolia Theatre, 3699 McKinney Ave. Tickets are $12.50.
