Avoid The Bell Tower

We take our chills when we can get them in the summer months: snow cones, the air-conditioned confines of we-don’t-even-care-where, and blood-curdling moments on the big screen. I’ll argue that the spate of summer slasher pics don’t quite accomplish that, though — nobody feels cool after 90 minutes of anxiety-feeding gore and gotcha moments. What’s missing from the multiplex is a disquieting cold that has nothing to do with a cranked-up AC, and nobody was the master of that quite like Alfred Hitchcock. Take his 1958 masterpiece, Vertigo, playing at 7 p.m. Monday as part of the Dallas Opera’s summer events highlighting its upcoming season By Love Transformed. The classic evokes chilly San Francisco nights and blankets you in a particularly frosty dread during that classic fourth wall reveal by snow queen, Kim Novak. Head to the glacial climes of the Highland Park Village Theatre, 32 Highland Park Village, to revisit the creepy, spinny and ultimately icy tale of a disturbed former police detective chasing all manner of ghosts. Even cooler? This screening is free if you register at dallasopera.org/events.
