Bead Me, Baby

You’ve seen the organic King Cakes resting awkwardly on Whole Foods’ shelves, which leads to the questions 1.) Man, is it Mardi Gras already? And 2.) Is the cake baby gluten-free? Well, we don’t know details on the bastardized baked goods, but Oak Cliff’s Mardi Gras is ready to show you theirs. Overachievers will wake up way too early for Oak Cliff’s Dash for the Beads 5K Run and Festival. Beginning at 8:30 a.m., at Kidd Springs Park (Cedar Hill Avenue and Fifth Street), this family-friendly, pet-friendly dash costs between $20 and $30 to enter, with funds raised going to help Oak Cliff get its first dog park. OK, you win: I’ll wake up early. Everybody needs a dog park. Visit Take a breather, put on your dancing shoes and kick it over to the Kessler Theater (1230 W. Davis St.) for the annual OCarnivale Mardi Gras Ball, where $50 gets you a dreamily drunken night of dancing, hurricane in hand, to live N’awlins swing and refueling with delicious creole cooking. On Sunday afternoon, when your hangover’s faded enough to remove your mask, simply roll out of bed and plop yourself down for the parade in Bishop Arts. (Psst, M’antiques has some amazing beads that you totally need, so pop an Advil and stop there first.) It runs from 4 to 6 p.m. Park your can along Davis Street or just make a friend and hop on a float. Visit
