Dallas, I hope you’ve braced yourself for Artopia. We at the Observer pride ourselves in being better than everyone else in several important ways — we write the words that make you happy, dig up interesting events and spotlight the artists who make our city great. That’s all well and good, but our real ace in the hole lies in our ability to throw a crazy cool throw-down bash of epic effing proportions. We’re doing exactly that on Saturday night at Artopia, our celebration of aesthetic creativity and booze, sweet delicious booze. Running from 8 to 11 p.m. (there’s an afterparty at that chic new club LeVu), we’re bringing you four fashion shows by local designers; live painting by JMR; a local art exhibition by guest curator Pedro Alonzo; decadent food sampling with Gordon Biersch, Pure Delite Cupcakes, East Hampton Sandwich Co., the Seafood Shack, Company Cafe, Red Mango Frozen Yogurt & Smoothies, Primebar and Elizabeth’s Cakes; DJs Wanz Dover and Redeye; live music by Ishi — and my favorite part of the night, a special gallery showcase by our 2013 Mastermind winners. For those who aren’t familiar, Masterminds are publicly nominated folks from the arts community, who are then put through a stringent judging panel’s vetting process. The most remarkably vibrant souls emerging from the stacks of nominees are then honored as Masterminds and given cash grants and public adoration. We think this is pretty rad. Now, take all of that, wrap it in a velvet cape and drop it smack into the middle of the Dallas Contemporary’s (161 Glass St.) latest exhibition — a swank detailing of lowrider culture by Chicago artist DZINE. There will be actual lowriders displayed throughout the gallery and giant fuck-off necklaces hanging from the galleries’ hand-painted walls. So, yeah. It’s going to be that kind of party. I think you should start getting excited now, then buy a ticket at http://microapp.dallasobserver.com/artopia/2013. They cost $40 to $80.
