Betting on the Ponies

The best scene in My Fair Lady--the classic flick starring Audrey Hepburn as a Cockney flower girl turned faux aristocrat--happens at the horse races. An excited Eliza Doolittle loses her head and yells, "Come on Dover, move yer bloomin' arse!" Truer words have never been spoken. Despite the gaudy hats and mint juleps at the Kentucky Derby, ladylike behavior goes out the window at the horse races, especially when there's money involved. Get your bloomin' arse out to the opening weekend of the 2010 Spring Thoroughbred Season starting Thursday night at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, 1000 Lone Star Parkway. After the races, stick around for The Randy Rogers Band on Friday night and Blake Shelton Saturday. The highlight of Family Fun Day on Sunday is a visit from SpongeBob SquarePants (what else says horse racing like a talking sponge?). General-admission tickets are $3 for children, $5 for adults and $15 after 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights. Live races begin at 6:35 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and 1:35 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Discounts are available for senior citizens and military personnel on Sunday. For more information, call 800-795-RACE or visit
