With school having just started, we need to reinforce the importance of the written (and spoken) word to the little ones, and Tulisoma 2011 South Dallas Book Fair and Art Festival is just the event needed to spur them on. The word tulisoma is Swahili for "we read," so it's only appropriate that the people behind the popular South Dallas book fair adopted it as the event name nine years ago. Featuring events like writing workshops, book signings, poetry slams, lectures and tons of activities for the kids, Tulisoma is more than a book fair, it's a neighborhood cultural event designed for the whole family. Kick off a weekend of literary family fun with the 2011 Heart and Soul Tour, led by Councilwoman Carolyn R. Davis, on Friday at 2 p.m., to be be followed by some good old fashioned southern cuisine and conversation. Tulisoma 2011 lasts all weekend long with events taking place Friday through Sunday at several locations throughout town including the South Dallas Cultural Center (3400 South Fitzhugh St.) and the African American Museum at Fair Park (3536 Grand Ave.). Admission is free to the public. Visit tulisoma.org for the full schedule of events.
Aug. 26-28, 2 p.m., 2011
