Born to Be Wild

All right, all right, we all know that Easy Rider is one of the most iconoclastic films of all time. We all know that it is full of wacked-out performances and was made on a shoestring budget by "real hippies" who most likely don't even remember being on the set because they were so busy "method acting" with a baggie and a pack of rolling papers. Some of you may even know that the production company that put it out is the same one that was responsible for the Monkees. But all hippie credentials aside, Easy Rider virtually created the American Independent movie industry. It showed Hollywood that if you let a couple of freaks (namely, Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper), make their own little movie for their own generation, you can make millions and millions of dollars from it. Of course this was 1969, so most of the actors', writers' and director's profits probably went straight into their bloodstreams, but it's still entertaining as hell and Jack Nicholson's nutjob performance is one of the greatest of the era.
