When presented with the theme of Viva Dallas Burlesque’s upcoming showcase, Burton Burlesque, a friend pointed out that unlike the normal expectations of burlesque, this one could actually be fabulously, awkwardly un-erotic. Which, despite the sound of it, is not actually an insult to the skills of the VDB performers, it’s an acknowledgement they’ll likely nail their subject matter right on the head. We’ll explain: Think about any Tim Burton movie you’ve seen from Beetlejuice to Edward Scissorhands to The Nightmare Before Christmas. They’re all visually compelling, no doubt, but they’re not really, well, sexy by traditional standards. But the great thing about burlesque is it bends in strange ways (sorta like Jack Skellington) to accommodate all manner of props, themes, and bodies (we hope even Oompa Loompa), and overwhelm your senses. Sounds like a match Burton would be down for, so our expectations are undoubtedly high for this group of 25 performers. Those 18 and up can enjoy the twirling, swirling macabre 8 p.m. Friday at Lakewood Theater, 1825 Abrams Pkwy. Tickets are $20-$180, and advanced purchase is highly recommended.
