Día de los Americas
After elementary school, Columbus Day loses a lot of its luster. The day off is nice, but it starts to get harder and harder to really get into Christopher Columbus. You learn that he actually wanted to get to India and about the whole genocide part, and it’s just hard to get excited about him as an icon in general. If you’re looking for some new way to celebrate the founding of the Americas, head to Tierra Sur Fest in Oak Cliff. From noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, in front of the Jefferson Tower, 351 West Jefferson Blvd., Tierra Sur’s (“southern land”) open-air festival welcomes Dallas’ Latin-American community with all the reliable staples for celebrating a culture: art, music, dancing and, most important, food. Tickets are $10 but kids younger than 10 get in for free. Ticket cost includes samples of nine traditional drinks. Visit
