Dance Machines

It's 1990. A little girl sits in front of her television smacking gum. On the screen a man in a white hat walks up to a door, opens it and is flooded with white light. The little girl's eyes widen. She leans in closer and watches in awe as he thrusts his hips and moonwalks. By the end of it she is on her feet trying to lean at a 45 degree angle. She spends years after trying every kind of dance class she can and learns that looking that cool is not nearly as easy as it seems. Few ever make it from the ballet barre to the sparkly white glove, but for a dancer it's worth all the time, hard work, bruised feet and sore muscles just to try. And when they make it look easy, everyone wants to watch. Contemporary Dance/Fort Worth presents the sixth annual Modern Dance Festival at The Modern in Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell St. The free event kicks off this Friday and will feature, in addition to all the amazing dance performances, a lecture and book signing by choreographer extraordinaire Jeff Slayton and screenings of dance-related short films.
