What happens when somebody dies and you don't feel particularly sad? We all know that it's basic human decency to crumple a bit and mourn the loss of someone we know when they pass, but what if you just can't muster those feelings? What if that person was kind of awful, and you aren't glad they're dead but you're not losing a bunch of sleep over it, either? That's a messy bunch of feelings, and it’s part of the premise of The Wake of Jamey Foster. Penned by Beth Hanley, the play deals with the death of its titular character and the reactions of his unconventional family. Mr. Foster meets his end while consorting with a mistress in a pasture and was generally a total tool throughout his life. As his family - including his wife and his brother - gathers to mourn him, they must fight through their complicated feelings for Jamey and for each other as they lay him to rest. The Wake of Jamey Foster is a dark and funny rumination about the eccentricities and untidy feelings associated with family. The play will be staged at Pocket Sandwich Theater, 5400 East Mockingbird Lane, Suite 119, through June 30. Show times are 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 7 p.m. Sundays.
