Experience This

Few things feel like more of a beat-down than a day at the mall hunting for gifts you pray your special someone doesn't already have but know probably already does. Come on...there are only so many Coach purses or DKNY ties one person can own. And besides wanting to beat the crap out of the couple in housewares whose screeching child makes you question the sanity of producing additional humans, you hate mall shopping for myriad reasons, the greatest of which lies in the truth that unique gifts simply do not exist in stores replicated in every freaking American city. This is precisely why events such as the Urban Bazaar are more important than remembering to take your Prozac before walking through the automatic doors of JCPenney. A haven from the democratized banality that is the shopping mall, the Urban Bazaar is a chance for local artists, designers and craft makers to showcase their work. This year marks the Bazaar's eighth anniversary, so take the opportunity to diss mass production and embrace local artistry by checking out the scene in the Bishop Arts District. You won't see one Neiman Marcus catalog there, but who really gives a crap about a gold-encrusted espresso machine? Urban Bazaar takes place 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. December 6 in the Bishop Arts District. Details are available at dallasindieexperience.com.
Sat., Dec. 6, 11 a.m.-10 p.m., 2008
