Art blooms among the blossoms
Now that the summer heat wave is starting to subside, you can finally turn down the air conditioner and once again enjoy the outdoors. Just in time, too, as the wilting flowers at the Dallas Arboretum are--like us--springing back to life for their annual fall show. The 100,000 blooms, including chrysanthemums and begonias, will be showing an artistic flair. Dallas Blooms Autumn's theme, "A Palette in Bloom," is designed around a centerpiece garden shaped like a painter's palette. Keeping with the artistic theme, the gardens present ArtScape, a fine art show and sale featuring work from more than 60 artists, to open the festival this Saturday and Sunday. Other art-oriented events will be presented throughout the Autumn showcase, including demonstrations, concerts and fun stuff for the kids. Just brace yourself because you know the weekend you plan to attend will coincide with the last unexpected blast of overwhelming summer heat. Dallas Blooms Autumn opens Saturday and runs 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through October 30, but you can get a sneak peek Thursday at 7 p.m. during a concert starring Hard Night's Day and Voodoo Blue (tribute bands to, respectively, the Beatles and Stevie Ray Vaughan). Concert tickets are $14. Regular admission to the arboretum, 8525 Garland Road, is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, $5 for children 3 to 12 and free for children under 3. For all the philanthropists in Dallas who love to golf, it's time to break out the checkbook and start brushing up on that swing. The Dallas Red Cross Golf Classic Swing for Relief is a prime opportunity to show off to the golfing buddies and donate to a good cause. The proceeds of Swing for Relief, which is scheduled for Monday at the Creek Course of the Prestonwood Country Club, 15909 Preston Road, will benefit nearly 3 million people in the 11 counties that the Dallas Area Chapter of the American Red Cross serves. Registration is at 10 a.m. The shotgun start is at 11:30 a.m. Afterward, there's a party with cocktails, a buffet, an awards ceremony and a fund-raising auction. To participate in Swing for Relief, it takes $350 and the desire to help out an organization with a strong history of community commitment.
