Tony Hawk, since turning pro at 14, has made it seem possible to turn a passion into a career. Hawk is an icon, an innovator, an animated action star, a living legend adding another achievement to his résumé: a stunt circus. Employing other professional athletes such as Bucky Lasek (a favorite choice on PlayStation's Tony Hawk's Pro Skater games), BMXers Dave Mirra and Matt Hoffman and motocross champs such as Carey Hart, Hawk choreographed pure synchronicity for Tony Hawk's Boom Boom HuckJam Arena Tour.
With extreme stunts and live music set upon a multimillion-dollar customized setup with a complete soundtrack provided live by Face to Face, Hawk's vision is to bring a show cross-country to venues where bands and athletes could pull out all the stops--and a few pyrotechnics--for kids and their parents. An awesome aspect of the show is that the audience isn't only seeing a skateboarding demonstration, a BMX rally, a motocross event or a concert. The Boom Boom HuckJam is all of those things working together like a finely tuned machine, still allowing for improvisation and the occasional crash and burn.
Serious scrapes and bruises come with such athleticism. It's about being in love with the sport despite the injury, and because of that drive, these athletes are champions. Tony Hawk is the master of the Hawk's 900, a two-and-a-half midair rotation, and Matt Hoffman is the only BMXer to land a no-handed 900. In addition, motocross great Carey Hart landed the first back flip on a motorcycle.
Tony Hawk's Boom Boom HuckJam Arena Tour
7 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $17.50 to $75. Call Ticketmaster at 214-373-8000.
It's an opportunity for an extreme sports fan to see every aspect of each sport. And, for some, a perfect demonstration for nay-saying parents that one can achieve success with that damn skateboard that isn't allowed in the house. A chance to see real people accomplishing amazing stunts they've built their careers on and still love. Professional, retired, amateur or strictly video game, the show brings any level of skater or rider together for the mutual ooh and aah.
