I just might be the laziest birder in Dallas. Sure, I've got the field guides, even a couple of feeders. But I just can't seem to get my ass up and make haste to the great outdoors on the weekends, content instead to sit by my bedroom window in my underwear watching the same pitiful grackles and doves that visit the yard every day. This is why old timers are good at this stuff—they get up hella early and they probably weren't at the Double Wide till 2 a.m. Luckily for me we live in the age of the blogosphere, where I can check out J.R. Compton's Amateur Birder's Journal, a blog of fascinating bird photographs taken during Compton's frequent trips to White Rock Lake. (The plethora of wildlife that might have been watching as I made out with numerous high school girlfriends there is simply staggering.) If you prefer your photos in a gallery setting, however, several of Compton's favorite shots are on display through April 20 at the Bath House Cultural Center, 521 E. Lawther Drive. You'll see hawks, egrets, ducks, songbirds and a bunch of other winged creatures captured by Compton's lens. The gallery is open "mornings" (or afternoons to the rest of you) 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Call 214-670-8749 or visit bathhousecultural.com.
