We spent our youths enjoying screen classics from studios like Disney and (for the later generation) Pixar, and though it was pretty rockin’, the kids in Japan had us beat — they had Studio Ghibli. Founded in 1985 by anime superstars Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli has produced dozens of short and feature-length films, but it wasn’t well known stateside until the 1999 release of Princess Mononoke. If you’ve never experienced the magic that is a Ghibli film (or want to take a big screen walk down memory lane), the 28th Annual KidFilm Festival is bringing it with its two day tribute to Studio Ghibli. Featuring 11 amazing films in a retrospective spanning from 1984’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind to an early screening of the upcoming The Secret World of Arrietty, KidFilm will make the Angelika Film Center, 5321 E. Mockingbird Lane, the place to be Saturday and Sunday. Tickets for all screenings are $5 ($4 for USA Film Festival members). Call 214-821-FILM or visit usafilmfestival.com for the complete schedule.
