Get Off on Gourds

Really? There are still kids today who would enjoy posing in a version of Cinderella's magically transformed carriage? Thought they'd all be busy killing things in Gears of War 3. Amazing what we don't know about children (damn restraining order). If your little princess -- or prince, we're not judging -- aches to take a seat in Cinderella's ride, Autumn at the Arboretum, the pumpkin-themed festival at the Dallas Arboretum, 8525 Garland Road, is for them. The theme this fall is "It's a Fairy Tale World," and apparently fairy tale denizens are fond of big vegetables, as the arboretum grounds are filled with more than 50,000 pumpkins, gourds and squash along with Cinderella's Pumpkin Village, based on the tale and featuring the carriage with topiary horses and four houses made out of pumpkins and gourds. The fest also brings an Oktoberfest Garten offering German dishes, a hay-bale maze, live music and a host of vibrant fall blooms. With the temperatures finally dropping, it's the perfect chance to reintroduce yourself and your kids to the world outside air conditioning. The Dallas Arboretum is open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. Regular admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors age 64 and older, $8 for children ages 3-12. Children younger than 3 get in free. For more event info and specials, call 214-515-6500 or visit
