Playwright Martin McDonagh can be kind of scary. Not the man himself, per se, but the man whose mind can come up with the disturbingly awesome tales McDonagh's written over the years (see The Pillowman and In Bruges). McDonagh has a knack for making the bloody and horrid hilarious and entertaining, and the award-winning play The Lieutenant of Inishmore, opening Monday at WaterTower Theatre at the Addison Theatre Centre (15650 Addison Road), is a prime example. The story of Padraic (a "not quite right in the head" guy who's considered too extreme for his IRA splinter group), the people who want him dead and a couple of cats, The Lieutenant of Inishmore is filled with torture, carnage, sharpshooting and a loyal love of the aforementioned felines. Not a sight for the squeamish, Terry Martin's production of The Lieutenant of Inishmore, with special effects from Steve Tolin, takes the stage through February 6, with the opening-night performance including a pre-show open bar and a post-show reception with the cast and crew at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for opening night are $40, with regular performances tickets available for $22 to $40. Call 972-450-6232 or visit watertowertheatre.org.
