Global Prime Time
I hate to break the news to you, but there's more to international dance and performance than watching Paulina Porizkova foxtrot or Heather Mills (not so much McCartney) try her hand, I mean leg, at Dancing With the Stars this week. Mills may samba, paso doble and tango alongside other celebrities, but chances of the girl breaking into a traditional Ukrainian dance or global hip-hop are pretty unlikely, entertaining as it would be. If you want to see how traditional performances of the world are really done, head down to the DFW International Community Alliance's 11th Annual Dallas International Festival, a multimedia experience of theater, poetry and film which brings 16 "Best of Dallas" performance groups to one stage. Acts such as Hong-Gia Vietnam Martial Arts, Parastoo Folk Ensemble (Iran), Burundi Boys (Africa) and more Folklórico than you can shake a stick at (Native American, Argentina and Mexico) will take the stage for an afternoon of global culture and appreciation, showing us the diversity that coexists in our own community, not just on TV specials. The Dallas International Festival begins 2 p.m. Sunday at the Majestic Theatre, 1925 Elm St. Tickets are $10. Call 214-373-8000 or visit dfwinternational.org.
Sun., March 25, 2 p.m.
