Gone To Pot
Pot humor can hardly be called a universally enjoyed subject of comedy, as there will always be abstainers who don't get the joke. But comedians who make the occasional 420 reference will always have a built-in audience of stoners--and that sucks. Because, as much as it pains me to admit it, most pot comedy just isn't funny. And why should it be, if half the audience is gonna toke up in the parking lot before the show? You could make funny faces for half an hour and they'd laugh. Mention losing your keys, make up a new nickname for weed and preach to the choir with a legalize-it rant and you'll get a standing O. But with his quick wit and winding tangents, Doug Benson is better than most pot comics--and more dedicated. He was named High Times' 2006 Stoner of the Year and starred in the 2007 documentary Super High Me, which was like Super Size Me except instead of eating McDonald's every day, he smoked pot and talked to medical-marijuana advocates. Benson performs Thursday through Saturday at Hyena's, 605 Houston St. in Fort Worth. Thursday's show is free, and admission is $10 Friday and Saturday.
