What happens when you take an uppity black family from California and stick them back in their hood roots for the holidays? You get Kendrick D. Young’s newest stage production, Christmas n’ Da Hood. That’s right! The flyer really sums it up: The scene is set with an artful rendering of intersecting street signs at Hollyhood and MLK Jr. boulevards, alerting you that you’re in for it. Next to that, a man dressed as Santa is popping out of a tricked-out Cadillac. In one hand he’s holding a panhandler’s sign, telling all who see it that “Chrimuss Iz Cancellld.” His other arm is outstretched, as though side-hugging an imaginary friend. In the back seat sits a hot chick surrounded by gift bags who may or may not be in the show — that part’s pretty vague. Also, the flyer tells us that Christmas n’ Da Hood stars Palmer Williams Jr. from Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, so hightail it to TicketMaster to score your seats. They range $32.95 to $45.90. This show runs through December 22 at the Black Academy of Arts and Letters Bruton Theater (650 S. Griffin St.).
