Those of you who have seen the 1981 animated sci-fi trip Heavy Metal don't need to hear anything more than that it's next up on the Inwood's impeccable list of midnight screenings. Those of you that haven't, please bear with me as I attempt to walk you through this. Basically, a glowing green orb named Loc-Nar, who happens to be the embodiment of all things evil, decides to terrorize a young girl by recounting to her its havoc-wreaking experiences amid the gruesome futuristic battle between good and evil. The adventures are told as a series of short films involving erotic robots, bloodthirsty zombies, murderous barbarians, stoner aliens and other such lovable characters. If animated gore, nudity, eroticism and all-around fantasticalness is not enough to reel you in, how about a soundtrack that is far more intriguing than the title would suggest. Sammy Hagar, Black Sabbath, Devo, Stevie Nicks, Grand Funk Railroad and others do the stories justice, and decades of midnight screenings have taken it from cult to just classic. If you're going to experience Heavy Metal, you should definitely do it at one of the midnight screenings Friday or Saturday at the Inwood Theatre, 5458 W. Lovers Lane. Visit landmarktheatres.com.
