His Nights Off Broadway
Every season, American Idol is generally hit or miss in its endeavor to crank out a new music superstar. In some cases (ahem, Ruben Studdard), the winner fails to achieve anything memorable after winning the contest, and in others, quickly ousted contestants (Jennifer Hudson, anyone?) go on to accomplish career milestones no one ever would have expected. One such example is Constantine Maroulis, Tony Award nominee and current star of Broadway's Rock of Ages. This rock opera (of sorts) chronicles the timeless story of the small-town girl who moves to the big city (in this case, Los Angeles) and meets a rock star and inevitably falls in love. However, in this musical, the story is set to the rock anthems of the 1980s -- favorites that run the gamut from REO Speedwagon and Journey to Pat Benatar and Twisted Sister. The story celebrates all of the love and drama, heartbreak and hope that come with growing up, moving on and chasing dreams. And if that doesn't sound entertaining enough, surely singing along to "Don't Stop Believing" and waiting to see if Constantine indeed does live up to the hype should make for an interesting evening. The show stops in Dallas at the Winspear Opera House, Tuesday through May 29. For tickets and more information, visit tickets.attpac.org.
Tuesdays-Fridays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays, 2 & 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: May 17. Continues through May 29, 2011
