In Small Doses
It's a real shame that movie theaters don't show more shorts, especially considering all the lame trivia questions and banal commercials moviegoers have to sit through before your average Hollywood flick. About the only time you ever see shorts these days is before Pixar movies, or when they show short clips of nominated shorts during the Academy Awards. If you're interested in catching some of these films in their entirety, be sure to check out Magnolia Pictures' program of Academy Award-nominated short films, playing this weekend at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell Street. This year's nominees include West Bank Story (a musical comedy about two competing falafel stands in Israel), Australia's The Savior (the story of a Mormon evangelist and his forbidden love), Lifted (a Pixar entry that follows an alien committing his first abduction) and The Little Matchgirl (Disney's latest Hans Christian Andersen adaptation). The live-action and animated portions of the program run 99 minutes and 77 minutes, respectively, with a 15-minute intermission between the two. Catch the films at 6 p.m. Friday, 5 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $7.50, $5.50 for Modern members. Call 817-738-9215 or visit themodern.org.
Fri., Feb. 23, 6 & 8 p.m.; Sat., Feb. 24, 5 p.m.; Sun., Feb. 25, 2 & 4 p.m.
