It's A Hard-Knock Life
Annie mania struck me hard as a seven-year-old. The movie came out that year leaving a sea of red-headed merchandise in its wake: I had Annie T-shirts, Annie dolls and Annie records. I wanted curly ginger hair. I wanted a scruffy dog named Sandy. And most of all, I wanted to be an orphan. Orphans didn't get grounded for being plucky and spirited. Their sass got mad respect from their sooty friends and put them at the top of the adoption leaderboard. The only things that stood between me and adventure/increased socioeconomic status/unkempt canine ownership were my parents. And while this sounds terribly misguided (and also just terrible), I prefer to think I, like many other little girls at the time, was just wrapped up in the appeal of this independent, spunky redhead. Annie speaks to girls because she's outspoken, brave and super-confident in herself. And also because the songs stick in your head for, like, 29 years. Take the little girl in your life to the production of Annie at Artisan Center Theater, 420 E. Pipeline Road in Hurst. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through December 23 with 2:30 p.m. Sunday matinees on December 4, 11 and 18. Tickets are $16 for adults, $14 for students and senior citizens, $9 for children 12 and under, and are available online at ArtisanCT.com.
