Jaap It Up
The Dallas Symphony Orchestra is hosting a black-tie night of Beethoven for its annual gala, themed "Of Life and Love." Music director Jaap van Zweden will lead the DSO in Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, Eroica--Italian for "heroic." Beethoven originally wrote the symphony for Napoleon, but changed the title after Napoleon revealed his lust for power by declaring himself emperor. The piece is in four movements, the most famous being the funeral march. Guest pianist Jeffrey Kahane, music director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, will perform the German master's Piano Concerto No. 4. The 2010 Dallas Symphony Orchestra AT&T Gala begins at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Meyerson Symphony Center, 2301 Flora St. Gala tickets start at $1,000; tickets for the concert and after-party begin at $150.
