"Hey dude, how's that Pokey O's ice cream sandwich with the mint chocolate chip Blue Bell and the oatmeal cinnamon cookies?" "Oh, it's only heaven!" "Man, what was it like getting backstage at the White Stripes show and playing checkers with Meg White?" "Only heaven, dude!" "Honey, did you enjoy making love in the sand while the waves lapped at our feet and the soothing sounds of the Buena Vista Social Club filled the warm night air?" "Oh baby, it was only heaven." These are but a few of the ways the title of Only Heaven, the new production now playing at Theatre Three, could have been inspired had I written it myself. In reality, the show features the music of Ricky Ian Gordon, a New York City composer best-known for Dream True and Orpheus and Euridice, two shows inspired by the AIDS-related death of his partner in 1996. For Only Heaven, Gordon set the words of revered black poet Langston Hughes to music, resulting in a moving song cycle about the hopes and dreams of the working class. Only Heaven plays at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays through September 17 at Theatre Three, 2800 Routh St. Tickets are $20 to $30. Call 214-871-3300 or visit theatre3dallas.com.
Thursdays, 7:30 p.m.; Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2:30 p.m. Starts: Sept. 7. Continues through Sept. 17
