Maggie Smith Makes Life Worth Living
Why are we all excited about the premiere of Downton Abbey? Anyone who has followed the series at all knows that what’s in store can’t be much better than, say, a zombie apocalypse: Horrible things are going to happen and good people will be lost. But I suppose the good things (Violet, Lady Mary’s eyebrows) outweigh the bad, and we’ll all tune in despite how much the show’s writers love to torture us. If you’ve not been enterprising enough to figure out that you can rent the British version right now at a few local video stores, then you probably are chomping at the bit for the January 5 premiere on PBS — and maybe you need an audience for your predictions about who will be the next beloved character to encounter misery and/or death. You’ll feel right at home, then, at the Downton Abbey Party at Barnes and Noble, 7700 W. Northwest Highway, at 2 p.m. Sunday. Put on your best period piece, sip tea and nibble on biscuits during this free mix-and-mingler that celebrates all things Grantham. There’ll be trivia matches and costume contests with prizes. Visit barnesandnoble.com for more.
