What a lot of people don't get about Cheech and Chong is that they are playing characters. I'm not saying that Tommy Chong and Richard "Cheech" Marin have never smoked weed, or that they don't subscribe somewhat to the culture they helped create, but they wouldn't be funny if they were just stoners being stoners. They're comedians making fun, playing characters. They appeal most profoundly to the stoner crowd, because they are most familiar to that crowd. But don't think that just because you are a straight-laced teetotaler you won't find them funny. I think that anyone who has ever run across a casualty of weed culture will find hilarious recognition in Cheech and Chong's masterful parody. This ain't the '70s anymore, but as recent films like Pineapple Express have proven, Cheech and Chong's chosen subject matter hasn't gone out of style. Put that in your pipe and...well, you know. Recently reunited, they are doing a comedy tour, the aptly titled Cheech and Chong Light Up America, and it stops in Dallas at the Majestic Theatre for two sold-out shows Saturday. If you are one of the unlucky who spaced buying a ticket before it was too late, fear not. They return to the Majestic on January 9. Visit liveatthemajestic.com.
