New New Wave

It may seem like we just got the neon revolution terminated and the spiral perms grown out, but already the '80s are back. Bands are being influenced by '80s music, parties are being thrown with '80s themes and more and more people are wearing skinny ties. OK, so maybe people aren't wearing skinny ties again, but they should be. Any excuse to dress in '80s wear is a good one (or should be considering the embarrassment factor), but you won't find a better reason than Saturday.

That's when Taste of Dallas hosts its '80s Wave Flashback Tour 2002, featuring a triple shot of bands famous for their '80s hits. First to appear will be the gothy Gene Loves Jezebel, followed by ska/pop band General Public featuring Dave Wakeling; rounding off the night will be A Flock of Seagulls, made famous by its massive 1982 hit "I Ran." A Flock of Seagulls and General Public rarely tour, so any opportunity to see them is a chance not to be missed. With Dave Wakeling returning to play with General Public, all three bands will feature their original vocalists, although A Flock of Seagulls retains only its original vocalist, with hired guns filling in all other positions. Gone, too, is Mike Score's famous "waterfall" haircut. These days, he sports the always fashionable baseball cap/ponytail look.

Now into its 16th year, the annual Taste of Dallas in the West End--which, we should add, has trays and trays of tasty food on hand, thus its name--always manages to showcase bands from by-gone eras, and this year's '80s Wave Flashback night is no exception. Before the '80s bands get started, though, we're reminded of previous decades with the Beatles tribute band Me And My Monkey and the always entertaining '70s disco cover band Le Freak. After that, it's time to brush the hair up, don the skinny tie and party like it's 1989.
