Nice Spice


If the British comedy Red Dwarf has taught us anything, it's that there is no problem that can't be solved, or created, by a chicken vindaloo. This spicy Indian dish--containing, at least on the show, chicken, beer and curry powder--can give you indigestion, improve a boring pizza or become a homicidal curry-monster that tries to destroy your spaceship. Or you can just eat it. If you want to learn how to make this versatile fare or some of its Indian brethren, come to the Crow Collection of Asian Art, 2010 Flora St., at 7 p.m. July 1 to meet Indian chef and cuisine instructor Suneeta Vaswani when she introduces her recipe book Easy Indian Cooking. Attendees can participate in a cooking-centric discussion, sample recipes from the book and get their copy signed by Vaswani herself. When Friday rolls around, the first thing you notice is how that minuscule paycheck is burning a hole in your pocket. Next you're hoping to leave work early to beat the line at the bank. But when that check finally gets cashed, instead of wasting it on a night of meaningless debauchery, why not mix a little culture in your usual cocktail? The first Friday of each month, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and its restaurant, Café Modern, join forces to supply you with live music and drinks from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Also, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., pick from three-course menus designed by chef Dena Peterson and her staff. Thunder from Down Under

There are few things New Zealand is famous for. A landscape that ranges from active volcanoes to glacier lakes, but is best known for Lord of the Rings, which is set in Middle Earth. The home of the kiwi, a bird that can't fly; Sir Edmund Hillary, a guy who climbed Mount Everest; and Whale Rider, in which a girl wants to be a boy. And, as if that weren't enough, now New Zealand wants to be California, too. The island, with its temperate climate, coastal winds and abundant sunshine, is getting famous among wine connoisseurs for its sauvignon blanc and pinot noir. Taste for yourself when The Wine Market and More, 3858 Oak Lawn Ave. in Two Turtle Creek Village, hosts a New Zealand wine class July 6. Admission is $25 per person, and seating is limited.
