When Sherwood Schwartz died last year, the creator of Gilligan’s Island and The Brady Bunch ranked a lengthy obit in The New York Times, complete with a quote from a pair of academics who wrote, “Schwartz was pioneering a dramatic matrix built upon the emerging cultural concept of the ‘support group’: a collection of demographically diverse characters thrown together by circumstance and forced to become an ersatz ‘family.’” Aren’t those scholarly types something? They look at Schwartz and his work and see a pioneering visionary, whereas perhaps you — a normal person — see the creator of a godawful boatload of dumb, cheesy crap. Well, don’t wallow in ignorance forever, friend. Hie yourself to Courtyard Theater, 1509 H Ave. in Plano, and enlighten yourself by catching a performance of Gilligan’s Island: The Musical, which offers all the wit and insight of the original TV show, but with singing and dancing. Shows are at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday through February 18, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday. General admission tickets are $23 — a bargain for dramatic matrices set in musical theater. Call 972-941-5611 for more information.
Fridays-Sundays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays, 2 p.m. Starts: Feb. 10. Continues through Feb. 18, 2012
