Preach It Patch
It seems the real Patch Adams was somewhat disappointed in the 1998 film of the same name, mostly because it jumbled the facts. For instance, the film claimed that Adams' Gesundheit! Institute had already built the free hospital Adams had planned for years, while in reality the hospital is still a dream, even 12 years after the film's release. And considering the fact that Robin Williams made millions on the film, you would think he might have at least attempted to grow Adams' trademark hippie mustache--but noooooo. Patch Adams soldiers on, however, raising funds for his unorthodox West Virginia institute and speaking to whoever will listen about health care and our society's need to fundamentally rethink it. See for yourself when he speaks Thursday morning from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Fort Worth Convention Center, 1201 Houston St., as part of the 54th Annual Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association Convention. Registration for the convention is $40 and it's not just for healthcare professionals--if you're the parent or teacher of a special needs child, for instance, you might find much of interest to you.
