Rebooting the Familiar

Look carefully at an old family snapshot. Does the image in your hand match the one held in your memory? Are details and vividness missing from you mind or from the photo? Has the moment the photo captured faded from memory, or does it come flooding back with smells, sounds, emotions? Dallas-based artist Rusty Scruby explores the link between visual information, it's loss and recovery with his brilliant works in Memory Bytes, on display at Cris Worley Fine Arts, 2277 Monitor St. Scruby has reconstructed nostalgic family photos, cutting them into geometric shapes and knitting them back together into deep, complex, vivid images that challenge the viewer consider the line between the abstract and literal and how process visual cues to recognize and enhance the familiar and mundane. Memory Bytes is on exhibit through December 22. Gallery hours are weekdays by appointment and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturdays.
