Oh, no. Did you forget to buy a plane ticket to Munich again? Don’t worry, you can still celebrate Oktoberfest and all things German a lot closer to home this year — just up U.S. 75. The most important part of Oktoberfest (the beer) is being handled by Franconia, the authentically German microbrewery in McKinney, but there’ll be plenty more to enjoy. The family-friendly festival will be rich in food, drink and gemütlichkeit, so you can still embrace Bavarian culture as the season intended. Skip the declarations at customs, put on your lederhosen and enjoy live entertainment, cultural activities and tons of events for everyone in your household. Oktoberfest merriment takes place from 4 to 11 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday in the heart of Historic Downtown McKinney. The festival is free and open to the public. Call 972-547-7500 or visit mckinneytexas.org for a full schedule.
