Alison Marie Welsh creates a unique type of art. Macabre and beautiful, seductive and restrained, her ink-based images tell tales of curious ladies. They’re dangerous gals, be certain of it, and they’re the types of sketchy women Dali or Escher might have fallen in lust with. A self-taught creative, Welsh has contributed her work to 18 different group shows, but tonight is her first solo gig. It’s got a backbeat in doom bands Venomous Maximus, Maleveller and Mothership, who will add a musical aesthetic to Welsh’s cartoonish femme fatales. On Saturday, the show’s second and final night, things get a little more rock and roll with music by Austin’s John Wesley Coleman III, Casa Magnetica and Street Arabs. You have 48 hours to see this show at the new Smoke and Mirrors Gallery (406 S. Haskell Ave.), so book it. It’s free to look at from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday night and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday.
