Step To This
The thought of running stairs voluntarily makes me want to curl into the fetal position and cry for my mommy. Four years of running bleachers during high school basketball practices left me as conditioned as Pavlov's dog. Not everyone is permanently scarred by a sadistic coach, though. The big daddy of stair races, Germany's Mt. Everest Treppen-Marathon (39,700 steps), qualifies as a double marathon. For more sane individuals, there are races at the Empire State Building (1,576 steps) and the Big D Climb (1,040 steps). The latter takes place at the Fountain Place downtown, and the event is entering its sophomore year as a fund-raiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Before you sign up, know it's like climbing to the crown of the Statue of Liberty three times. May the stair-stepping gods be with you. The second annual Big D Climb takes place Saturday at 1445 Ross Ave. For more information, visit leukemia-lymphoma.org.
