Storm The Bookstore
If you're worth your salt when you lose your mind, you couldn't do better than to get institutionalized at McLean Hospital. The famous psychiatric hospital has played home to everyone from John Nash to Frederick Law Olmstead to David Foster Wallace, and the list of literary works set at McLean includes The Bell Jar and Girl, Interrupted as well as Stefan Merrill Block's newest novel, The Storm at the Door. No, the Plano native didn't stay at the hospital he' s dubbed the "Mayflower Home for the Mentally Ill," but his beloved and misunderstood grandfather once did, and The Storm at the Door is a fictionalized account of Block's grandparents' story. It stunningly walks the line between what he knew of the couple and what he imagined their lives to be like as he fills in the blanks on his written journey to discover his family's history. Stefan Merrill Block will be back in town this week as he makes a stop at Barnes & Noble at Creekwalk Village (801 W. 15th Street, Plano) for a book reading and signing (as well as Plano Family Literacy fundraiser) on Thursday at 7 p.m. Call 972-422-3372 or visit barnesandnoble.com.
