The Art of Rembrance

Memory is a strange thing. Somewhere in the tangled neurons of our brains lies our ability to make sense out of the things that have happened to us in our lifetime, and the way that the brain stores certain memories seems almost random. Some memories are strongly tied to smell; others can be triggered by a familiar song, and there are some that are completely put in context by recalling a vivid picture of the place they happened in. It's amazing the detail you can recall when you'’re being nostalgic. I can see the interior of an old diner my parents took us to as children as clear as day, down to the knots in the wood paneling. Artist Rosson Crow has a gift for storing details of the places she sees in her memory, and is able to recreate those scenes in a way that can recall the three-dimensional aspects of the places, as well as the emotional process that tied it to memory in the first place. Her bright and vivid images of trophy rooms, saloons and even butcher shops bring you to a specific place in her history, and perhaps yours as well. The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell St., features FOCUS: Rosson Crow Sunday through May 17. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.
