The Festival of the Chose

Even the choosiest of the Chosen People will be pleased with this year's eclectic lineup at the Jewish Arts Festival. The Jewish Community Center of Dallas revives the event for its 13th year following a two-year hiatus. It brings together arts and crafts exhibitions, kosher catering and an array of family-friendly activities. The festival features several comedy acts including the stand-up comedy of writer and actor Elon Gold, whose comedy has been featured on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and Chelsea Lately, and an old-school throwback, The Slappy and Monday Show, a slapstick clown duo who juggle, dance and perform music in their eclectic act. The event also ventures beyond contemporary Jewish tunes with cross-cultural musicians, most notably Joshua Nelson and Rick Recht. Nelson, the self-described Prince of Kosher Gospel, draws upon both his African-American and Jewish heritage to craft a unique blend of old and new music in the style of Mahalia Jackson. On the other hand, Recht and his band perform Jewish rock with the younger audiences in mind, often including audience participation in his acoustic jams. Tickets are $15, $8 for children ages 3 to 15. The festival opens at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Meyerson Symphony Center. Call 214-739-2737 or visit for a full schedule.
