The Game’s Afoot

A man walks into your office with white, chalky powder on his fingers, a nervous twitch and bags under his eyes. Obviously, he’s a school teacher. It’s elementary. Next case, Watson. Um … unless, of course, he’s just some slob who snarfed too many powdered doughnuts with his espresso after a night shift at a factory. Or cokehead on a bender. The real mystery of Sherlock Holmes, genius detective, is that his power of deductive reasoning generally only holds up well if you don’t think about it too much. Of course, countless fans would disagree, and for them, the Dallas Theater Center offers Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure, which has Sherlock and Watson on a case of blackmail that leads them into the lair of Holmes’ arch-enemy, Professor Moriarty. (Why don’t we see more lairs in real estate listings these days? Do only villains get lairs? It’s a mystery.) Chamblee Ferguson stars as Holmes in this play by Stephen Dietz, based on an original work by William Gillette and Arthur Conan Doyle. Kevin Moriarty (no relation) directs. Friday’s performance is pay-what-you-can and starts at 8 p.m. at the Wyly Theatre, 2400 Flora St. The show continues through May 25, with tickets $15 to $115. Visit dallastheatercenter.org.
