The Shortest Day
Greeting cards try to tell us the "reason for the season," but we know the truth. The real reason for the season is the moment when the earth is tilted furthest away from the sun, resulting in the longest night of the year--otherwise known as the winter solstice. Even ancient cultures recognized this midpoint, after which the days lengthen in the approach of spring. Whether you call it Christmas, Yule, or something else entirely, come welcome the return of the light at the Winter SolstiCelebration, 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Cathedral of Hope, 5910 Cedar Springs Road. This year's celebration is a tribute to John Lennon and is preceded and followed by a Yule Fest. Tickets are $8 to $12. Call 214-261-5599 or visit earthrhythms.org.
Fri., Dec. 17, 7-9 p.m., 2010
