There Is No Stopping in the Red Zone

Before there was Hot Shots, before there was the Naked Gun, there was Airplane! Yes, the film that wrested the spoof-movie monopoly from Mel Brooks is playing at the Inwood Theatre. What's that? Surely I'm joking? I never joke, and don't call me Shirley. So bring your inflatable co-pilot, your jive dictionary and your drinking problem to the showing of the greatest airplane disaster movie of 1980. Directed by Jim Abrahams and the Zucker brothers and starring a line of old-school tough guys like Leslie Nielsen, Robert Stack and Lloyd Bridges, the film covers the harrowing tale of a plane on a course for destruction because of some really terrible fish. Airplane!, for those who don't know, was the first film that posed the question: "Joey, have you ever seen a grown man naked?" Although it stands well enough on its own, the film works best when seen next to big disaster movies. I recommend watching the '57 film Zero Hour!, which was parodied nearly shot for shot, beforehand. I know I've crammed as many jokes as possible in to this, but it looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue. That's my problem, though. You go catch Airplane! at the Inwood midnight Friday or Saturday. For tickets, call 214-764-9106 or visit landmarktheatres.com.
