These Kids Today
Back in the '90s, Jonathon Larson made rock 'n' roll and seriously heavy issues all one nice, catchy musical package when he penned RENT. Well, apparently 100 years before that, a guy over in Germany had already done the same thing when he wrote Spring Awakening. The play centers around a group of teenagers all beginning to discover their burgeoning sexuality in a way that would make Ren McCormack blush. The heavy issues come in the form of onstage masturbation, abortion, rape, bondage and child abuse. It should come as no shock whatsoever that this play stirred up some pretty hefty controversy, so naturally, it was adapted for the musical stage. Duncan Sheik (the guy who wrote that song, "I am barely breathing, I can't find the air...") wrote the music for the play, which won eight Tony Awards the year it debuted on Broadway. And for ultimate artistic endorsement purposes, it was the play the kids on the new 90210 were doing at the beginning of the first season. So, should you want the opportunity, all of the adolescent sexual tumult you can stand is coming to DFW Tuesday to the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas' Arts District. The show will run through April 4, and tickets range from $25 to $150. Call 214-880-0202 or visit attpac.org.
