This Is The Dawning

When I was a child I had several of those bizarre compilations with kid versions of adult pop songs. One of my favorite songs was "Up, Up and Away," followed closely by "Let the Sun Shine In/Aquarius"--which, of course, I had no idea would be a favorite yet again when later a shirtless Paul Rudd (and others) would dance and scat to the same song in the closing credits of The 40 Year Old Virgin. But I digress. I think my mom had the actual 5th Dimension records and I later, in an effort to be just like Solid Gold's Marilyn McCoo, learned another one of their timeless classics, now featured on late night Time Life compilation infomercials, "One Less Bell to Answer." I had red flared pants and I was down with the 5th Dimension, people. About two decades late. But therein lies the beauty: Even though their first hit (the aforementioned "Up, Up and Away") topped the charts in 1967, the group (featuring original member Florence LaRue) is still touring and performing with a family-friendly show (of course) of smooth pop-rock numbers that'll make you want to iron your hair and wear rainbow-striped sneakers. See The 5th Dimension 8:15 p.m. Saturday at the Eisemann Center, 2351 Performance Drive in Richardson. Tickets are $14 to $80. Call the Plano Symphony Orchestra at 972-473-7262 or visit
