Vitamin TED, Now A Chewable
Gen X peeps know that back in the day, when you got called to a conference in middle school, it meant sitting through an hour of videos about the evils of drug use and how best to narc on your partying parents. Plus, there was that one video with projectile vomit. It was cool to skip history, but you really didn’t learn anything Arnold hadn’t already taught you on Diff’rent Strokes. Today, though, conferences have a whole new meaning for middle-schoolers. TEDxKids@SMU is not your old school assembly: It brings together junior-high kids from across the Dallas area to experience fast-paced presentations from educators, techies, designers, scientists and artists on a variety of intriguing topics. Speeches run the gamut from cyber security to service learning, and young minds are encouraged to think out of the box and take a DIY approach to problem solving. Give your kids the heads-up for this free event from 12:30 until 5 p.m. Friday at Dallas City Performance Hall, 2120 Flora St. If you can’t score them a spot at ted.com/tedx/events/10583, visit new.livestream.com/tedx/tedxkids2013 to see it streamed live.
