We Shall Overcome … By Dancing
When it comes down shaking up old traditions and busting down cultural barriers, nothing does it like '60s haircuts and copious amounts of shimmying and twisting. The beloved musical Hairspray doesn’t pull punches when it comes to mixing up old-school pop and loads of hair products. It’s the story of lighthearted, plus-size teenager Tracy Turnblad, who introduces a new rhythm to her hometown of 1960s Baltimore. Against the odds, she confidently auditions for a local TV dance program that practices a strict segregation policy. Tracy’s charm and charisma help her win a spot on the program, and from there she goes on crusade to integrate the show. The Garland Civic Theater presents Hairspray at the Granville Arts Center, 300 North 5th St. in downtown Garland, from November 17 though December 10. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays, with a special matinee performance December 10. Tickets are $27.
