What A Dame!
Everybody likes to think they were the first to come across a great idea, band or film. Trouble is, you're a nerdy schmuck and unless you're God Herself, chances are you're as late to the game as anybody. But some people are truly, truly old-school--like Dame Edna, the cross-dressing drag character who's been played by Australian comedian Barry Humphries since 1955. That means Humphries has worn more than 50 years' worth of purple wigs, loud eyeshadow and rhinestone glasses. You whippersnappers don't have a clue! For her part, the character of Dame Edna has long refused to acknowledge her own fictionality, referring to Humphries as her manager, rather than the man beneath her muumuu. If regular drag shows are about playful disbelief, Dame Edna shows are about all-out rejection of belief. See the deluded Dame for yourself as she comes to the Bass Performance Hall on her "First Last Tour." And hey, bring the kids--sure, there's sexual innuendo, but she might just convince them that hanging out with grandma isn't quite so bad in comparison. Shows are Tuesday through June 28 at the Bass Hall, 525 Commerce St. in Fort Worth. Dame Edna performs at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 8 p.m. Friday and Sunday. Tickets are $28 to $69.
